The weather satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are called Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites, GOES for short. The satellites are numbered GOES-1, GOES-2, etc. They are up to GOES-15 now. Once in orbit they become known as GOES East and GOES West.

The weather satelites in polar orbit are part of the Polar Operational Environmental Program (POES)and are called NOAA-17, NOAA-18 and NOAA-19.

The US military weather satellites are called Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP.)
