That Sunday Afternoon

Mike is playing ball at Ryan’s house when he gets a phone call from his mom, who’s at friends’ house, telling him to head home because of an impending thunderstorm. Normally he would have asked to wait the storm out at Ryan’s, but he still has homework and it’s already after five on Sunday afternoon. He rides his bike to his house and goes inside when the tornado sirens start screaming. He checks the local weather on TV and sees a giant funnel cloud on the TV tower cam before the electricity goe

I always wonder what I would do in such a situation as the tornado event in this story. What a young boy does blends together well, a fiction story with real life events. I have long enjoyed Veda’s books and short stories and was not disappointed in this one. As a Missourian I kept up with the news out of Joplin following that horrible day. Veda’s book depicts some of those actual events. The main character was a 12 year old boy and the things he did and saw in the aftermath made me, a great grandmother, wonder what I would have done in the same circumstances. The book was excellent in suspense, in compassion and in service as well. It was a very good look at the way Americans pull together as they always do, which in today’s society, the news media seems so astounded that people really do help other people. Yes the book is fiction based, on a real disaster, but it is so true to life in a Midwestern community. I loved it.

Mrs. Jones did an excellent job of portraying the events of “the storm” from so many different eyes: those who lost everything, those on the periphery, those that volunteered in the moment and those that came in to help in the days following the event. All view points were emotional and gripping and each ended in Hope. This is a vivid and poignant account of an event that effected thousands of lives and touched many more.

Having been in the EF-5 tornado, I can say that Veda Boyd Jones captured the rawness, anxiety and goodness of that afternoon and aftermath. Those readers who do not live in “Tornado Alley” will understand the power of a tornado and the strength and spirit of those who live here after reading this book..
